The Muer Family Legacy - How it All Began

The story of this beloved place, it’s almost like, goes back quite a ways, to 1929, to be exact. It started with a fellow named Joe Muer I, who, interestingly enough, made cigars for a living. You know, he had a different kind of business before he decided to try his hand at something new, something that would, in time, become a Detroit institution, a place people would talk about for generations.

He opened a modest little oyster bar, just a small spot really, on Gratiot Avenue in Detroit. It had, I mean, only seven tables and a handful of people working there. It was a humble beginning for what would grow into something much, much bigger. Because of this growing popularity, Joe Muer I, well, he decided to shift his focus. He started to spend less time on his cigar making and more time on his restaurant.
